PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

I ask my students to use academic words to describe character's emotions. These flashcards are just a few of the words available.

There are 3 pages with 12 emotions per page along with 3 pages of corresponding definitions. Some emotions included in the flashcards are apathetic, dejected, hesitant, reluctant, stern, etc.

I typically use these during the second semester as we prepare for our state's standardized test. By this point in the year, students have been exposed to these emotion terms. You will need to run your copies front and back flipping along the long edge. White paper works okay but you will be able to see the definitions through the page. I taught my students to keep cards in a stack so they couldn't peek:) Darker colored paper works the best. Neon and pastel colors show through also. I provide each student with a plastic sandwich bag so the cards can travel back and forth from home to school.

We study these cards DAILY in a variety of ways over a 2 week period prior to testing.

1. Self Study - independent study; divide cards into "I Got It" and "I Don't Got It" piles as study. Review the "I Don't Got It" pile as homework.

2. Study Buddy - With a partner, one student acts as teacher holding cards and "quizzes" other student. Remember to keep cards in a stack so can't see definition. Teacher student provides definition if student doesn't get in a few seconds. Set timer for approximately 7 minutes. Then reverse roles.

3. Speed - With a partner, place flashcards in pile with definitions facing up. Whoever says Reading term FIRST, takes card. Person with most cards at end of time period, WINS. I usually set timer for around 7 minutes.

4. Slap It and Shout It - *Kids' Favorite* Tape cards randomly to board with Reading term facing forward. Divide class into 2 groups. After forming 2 lines, provide the 2 leaders with a fly swatter. Teacher reads the definition to a term. The first leader to "slap" the word with their fly swatter and shout out the term, gets a point. If no one knows term withing 5 seconds, no point. Leaders go to back of their line and next person is up. You will need to assign someone to keep score. This is a very fast pace game. You will need to set up behavior expectations ahead of time to prevent things from getting out of hand. Teacher will need a hard copy of flashcards to call words from.
