It is finally being realized that children must be in the correct frame of mind to engage in learning. The idea of an emotional barometer is becoming more and more common. I just created this to use with my students this year. The goal is to print it, laminate it and put it together to form a banner. Each student should be given a name piece (use whatever you'd like.) You could even use their own photograph. Each morning when the children come into the classroom, they place their name in the appropriate place and then at a glance the teacher can see who needs a little extra time to clear their head and focus on the day. I am very excited to see how it works. I believe laughter is essential in childhood and it enhances learning. You can't laugh with a heavy heart. Let's see if we can help lighten the emotional load that some of our children bring to school. We can't solve it all but sometimes a little acknowledgement is a solution. Show you care!
