This graphic organizer .pdf was created to help those students who have difficulty communicating when they are upset, including students in ELL, with language impairment, autism, intellectual disability, or emotional disturbance.
The support should be presented to the student when the student is in a calm state, and each emotion discussed. The student can help the adult fill in the boxes with examples of times they may feel each emotion, as well as common things they may need when they are overwhelmed with emotion.
The support should be easily available for times when the student is upset and unable to communicate well, perhaps in the time-out chair or a support room. They can then identify the emotion they are feeling and what they need to happen for the next few moments to calm down.
An example page has been included.
