A matrix board can be a versatile therapy activity and easily adapted to the needs of individual students.
Students learn to converge an intersection from vertical and horizontal points. There are opportunities for both receptive and expressive practice.
It’s an optimal closed set structured listening task for children who have recently received a cochlear implant or who are learning to listen or extend auditory memory.
Auditory attention and memory can be expanded as the child’s skill level grows by creating longer cues. Matrix boards are also a great way to structure simple sentence formulation, story telling and a wide variety of syntactic structures including verb tense, subject-verb agreement and use of articles.
Picture cards are included that show a person and an object. The speaker needs to add a verb and an emotion word to the two pictured words to create a sentence. For example, Jenn was upset because she dropped her popcorn. The listener uses a star token or word card (also included) and places it on the matrix board at the intersection of Jenn and the popcorn. The sentences can be as creative/silly and as long as you want to make them making this an activity for a wider age range.
Use of different carrier phrases can be created to target different verb tense or other grammatical structures of your choice.
A set of emotion words are provided so you don’t have to be creative.
This can also be printed in duplicate and used as a barrier game or battleship type guessing game using the same type of grammatical structures.
