“Emotions and Feelings Rummy: Emotional Literacy Skills for Older Kids and Teens” provides teachers a proactive strategy for teaching social skills to students who have difficulty recognizing emotions and feelings in themselves and others. Students on the autism spectrum, as well as others who may have social communication deficits often have difficulty doing this, which can impact their ability to regulate their emotions and behave appropriately in the classroom. This activity allows students to build a repertoire of emotion and feeling words to draw upon so that they eventually learn to recognize that there are emotions beyond simply happy, mad or sad.
Student who lack emotional literacy skills often have academic challenges as well. Students may have difficulty understanding the point of view of others which can make it hard to comprehend what they read and discuss. This resource supports the acquisition of skills in students to make it easier for them to master the concepts addressed in College and Career Readiness Reading Anchor Standard # 3 which asks students to “ Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.”
This resource introduces and teaches thirteen emotion and feeling words using a game format. When assembled, a deck of 52 playing cards is formed, including a set of four cards for each word. Each set includes: a vocabulary card which presents the term; a definition card which gives its meaning and uses it in a sentence; a scenario card which describes a situation which might elicit that emotion or feeling in someone; and, a picture card, which depicts a high interest photograph of a person expressing it.
The product contains instructions for playing two types of rummy games with small groups of students and provides suggestions for a number of related extension and enrichment activities using these materials in the classroom with whole and small groups as well as individual students.
