Empathy Baseball is a classroom game for students in grades 3-8. Using the sports motif, it encourages students to practice their empathy skills by sharing feelings and receiving empathic responses. The class is divided into teams to elicit competition and keep it interesting, but the main focus is on teaching and reinforcing empathy.
There is a brief intro video explaining the value of empathy and inviting students to play the game. To earn points, students must participate, but the scenarios and feelings presented on the Feelings Cards and Situation Cards are familiar and the students will have no difficulty relating.
The value of the game is in the sharing of feelings among the class and the awareness that feelings are universal and that everyone experiences them.
There are no extra materials required although the teacher may want a bell, buzzer, or some type of timer.
