The following emotions are targeted:

  1. Pride
  2. Relief
  3. Embarrassment
  4. Envy
  5. Regret
  6. Contentment
  7. Frustration
  8. Disappointment
  9. Annoyed
  10. Hopeful
  11. Despair
  12. Accepted
  13. Anticipation
  14. Nostalgia

Each emotion has a “Complex Emotions” and “Predicting Emotions” activity.

The “Complex Emotions” activity defines each emotion, gives examples of situations that might cause someone to feel that emotion, and has the students list situations that make them feel that emotion.

The “Predicting Emotions” activity has students think of situations that cause them to feel a certain way, but it also has students pick someone they know and encourages them to think about situations that might cause that person to feel a particular emotion. Students then think about situations that are the same or different, and why certain situations might make people feel differently. This is a great way to target perspective-taking!

The “In Your Own Words” section has students draw a picture of each emotion word and use it in a sentence.

The “Emotion Drill Scenarios” are a list of scenarios where students must determine how they would feel in a situation.

After your students have mastered identifying emotions, there is a section on empathy.

A “What is Empathy” reading passage and quiz explain what empathy is and why it is important.

There is a section on “Taking Someone Else’s Perspective” and an activity for your students to practice “Expressing Empathy”.

The resource concludes with “Empathy Drill Scenarios”, which are a list of scenarios that your students can use to practice responding empathetically in a given situation.
