One of British author J.G. Ballard's best autobiographical (memoir) novels. As a film, Steven Spielberg directed this masterpiece. Often overlooked, but full of historical and literary value, this unit compliments anyone looking for a movie that can last several class periods with important literary questions that really probe student's understanding for theme, character motivation, conflict, symbolism, etc.
I've done it where I just show the film and then assign the journal questions after each section, but have also used it as a unit and used the included the profundity activity, writing assignment (with examples and graphic organizer included), etc.
There are seven files included: Profundity activity, Quiz/Essay, Sample Intro & Body, Themes activity, Sample Organizer, Sample Intro and Conclusion against organizer.
There's plenty to do for a few weeks, or you could keep it to several days.
Of course, you'll need a copy of the movie Empire of the Sun--a DVD you could get on Amazon or Ebay (or maybe stream).
