This lesson makes a subject that can be very confusing, very easy, and the first step is being able to define what an empirical observation is and what an inference is.
It can be used to introduce this content for the first time in elementary, or review it for grades as high as 12th. The activity also makes for a quick pre- and post-assessment.
The Common Core benchmark addressed is the ability to distinguish between empirical observation (what you see, hear, feel, smell, or taste) and ideas or inferences (what you think).
This activity also addresses Marzano’s Elements:
2: What do I typically do to track student progress?
6: What do I typically do to identify critical information?
The activity is a fill-in-the-blank slide with an answer key.
