Employers are constantly looking for people who possess the skills that are part of the core employability skills framework. These important skills are the ones that are easy to gain in everyday life - they don't take special, technical skills or experience. Students who include employability skills on their resumes are far more likely to gain employment than those who do not - or worse, don't even know what employability skills are. The ability to self market and seek out work based on strong employability skills will help Year 9, 10 and 11 students move into vocational placements, training, college, further study or workplaces.
The core employability skills are:
Manage career and work life
Work with roles, rights and protocols
Interact with others
Communicate for work
Connect and work with others
Recognise and utilise diverse perspectives
Plan and organise
Identify and solve problems
Create and innovate
Work in a digital world
So why do so many students overlook the importance of writing employability skills into their resumes?
This simple activity guides students through the process of identifying the core employability skills, thinking about what each one means to them and planning how they can show this skill to a potential employer and write it into their resume.
