NEED A DIFFERENT VERSION?
Save yourself the time and energy needed to create alternative pre-assessments and reflections for each of the 16 topics. I've done it for you! The best part is that students are involved in their learning, tracking their progress and making goals for the future!
Pretest for All 16 Topics (with answer keys) – Students will take the brief pre-test, included in this packet. Each pretest is one page and worth 10 points. They are designed to be graded quickly so they can often be graded during a prep/lunch and returned to students the same day/next day.
Student Pre and Post Test Score Graph for 16 topics – Once students have their graded pretests returned, they should graph their own score on the chart. Because each pretest has 10 questions, they should be able to easily graph (and even determine independently) the percent they answered correctly. I like to have all pretest scores graphed in red.
Teacher Pre and Post Test Score Graph for 16 topics – Optional, if you prefer paper/pencil graphs as opposed to digital ones. I like to hang these in the classroom to help develop the understanding that students are growing together!
PRE Reflections for All 16 Topics: After graphing their pretest scores, students will answer the first question on the reflection page for the corresponding topic. The question students answer after each pretest is the same, as students reflect upon how they did. They will discuss a need for more help or a greater challenge. Then they will discuss how they will meet their personal goal and who is needed to help them (self, parent, teacher). I don’t want students to spend too much time on this, but they should be clear and specific. At the beginning of the year we talk a lot about what types of things they should write here that will be helpful to both myself and their parents. I give online suggestions for students to include in their reflection such as IXL, Khan Academy that can be used for remediation or an extra challenge.
Posttest – NOT INCLUDED! For this, I use the topic tests included in the math series. After the test, students should graph their POSTtest score in blue next to their old red PREtest score for the topic.
POST Reflections for All 16 Topics – After graphing their posttest scores, students can answer the second question on the reflection page for the corresponding topic. This will be below their pretest reflection. The posttest reflections are different for each topic and will give students an opportunity to reflect upon their goals and progress.
Optional Parent Signature – Depending on what works best for you – I like to have parents sign after the PRE test so that they have a better idea of how much support their child might need during the topic. Not only do I have a heads up on who needs more support or a challenge, parents are included and can help me to support their child.
After 7 years in 5th, I'm re-energized for 4th and spent over 25 hours creating this resource. I'm so excited that it's done for the whole year. Please let me know what you think. If I make any changes throughout the year I'll update new copies. Also, if you have suggestions or requests, please let me know!
