*Have your students make a VIDEO to show to next year's class!*
This product includes 6 different parts to the video and is available for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades.
I have been looking for a way to change up the classic and meaningful end of year activity of giving advice to future students. It is a great way for students to reflect on the year they’ve had, and also for teachers to see what things really stuck out to their students. However, I wanted to make it a little bit more fun and interactive than having my graduating students write a letter to my incoming students. So, I decided to have my students create a “survival guide” video.
Students can use any movie making application or website (iMovie, Moviemaker, etc.) to complete this activity but they will need access to a camera of some sort. You can have students work individually or in groups, and I have included 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade versions of those pages that are grade specific. Students brainstorm, write their script, come up with editing/filming ideas, and then ultimately create their video.
My kids had so much fun making these survival guides. We watched them all together as a memorable end of year activity. I put them on my teacher website to welcome my incoming students, and I show my new students these “survival guides” from last year’s class during the first few days of school. They love hearing things from other kids (rather than just from me) and it really gets them excited for the year ahead!
I have found that this activity really helps to initiate a positive classroom environment from the start. Parents have commented on how excited and comfortable their students felt after seeing old students/familiar faces giving advice and telling them what to look forward to!
