Product Description
This low prep, print-and-go writing activity is a great way for students to show what they learned about American history between the late 1400s and 1800 during the school year. Students pretend to be a famous actor who is creating a TV series about one of the following time periods: The Age of Exploration, French and Spanish Colonies, Early English Colonies, the Thirteen Colonies, or the Revolutionary War and the events that led up to it. (Please note: This resource is included in a money-saving bundle with 3 other End of Year Social Studies writing activities; you can find it here.)

Students write a persuasive letter to a network TV executive about which time period was the most important and would be the most exciting for a TV show. The writing prompt is in RAFTS format (Role, Audience, Format, Topic, Strong Verb) and this resource includes graphic organizers for note-taking and pre-writing, a model of a friendly letter, a checklist for assessing the final product, and pages for writing the first draft and final copies.

This resource has 2 versions. The first is for Grade 5, with the writing prompt in simpler language. The second version is for Grades 6 - 8, which includes space for writing about why one of the other time periods would not be the best one for a TV show.

The writing prompt pages are available with color clip art, with black-and-white clip art, and with no clip art. Instructions for an optional oral presentation component are included to give students practice in giving speeches. The writing activity can be done in class or for homework; if done entirely in class, it will take 3 - 4 periods, depending on how much time you allocate for note-taking, pre-writing and revising. You can use this resource with both your English Language Learners and your native English- speaking students.

Pages with lesson objectives, a list of ELA Common Core standards addressed, and a sample WIDA Model Performance Indicator are also provided for your convenience.

This writing task enables students to review what they have learned over the course of the year in a fun and engaging way!
