Compare and Contrast: "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost and "Autobiography In Five Chapters" by Portia Nelson

This poetry lesson packs a punch, when it comes to integrating state standards. More importantly, the timeless poetry will echo throughout your students’ lives forever. On the surface, the poems are easy, until I ask someone to explain the deep meaning. It’s fun to watch kids' faces, as the lights click on throughout guided discussions. This lesson was written for kids of all ages, including adults. You can teach it at any point during the school year, but it works especially well at the beginning of the year, when you are trying to form a classroom family. It also fits well near the end of the school year, when you are sending your students up ahead on the pathways of their own lives, with difficult choices in their future. Students always want personal copies, and they love it when grandparents share a passion for the same poetry we are studying in class. The timeless messages within the poetry, will help your students connect to the curriculum, to poetry, and to one another. If you don’t like poetry, you will, and this will be one of your favorite units, year after year.
