End of year research project
Looking for a great way to end your school year in your high school English class? This presentation hand out and rubric work great in place of a final exam or as a way to fill some dead time when you don't feel like starting another novel. The project can take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks and allows students to pursue their own interests while working independently. One of the best parts of this project is that there is no take home grading!
My inspiration for this project came from my students who often complain about the lack of choice in school. This project's topic is: Anything students are interesting in research. At first I thought unlimited choice would be a disaster, but students always have great ideas and it's pretty easy to help them find a focus for the project.
This download includes: the assignment sheet with requirements, a rubric with each category clearly outlined, a sample research proposal, and a list of possible topics that have been successful in the past.
The only limitation I give is that the topic must be something they can argue. For example, a student couldn't give a presentation on tigers, but they might explain how man has endangered the natural habitat of the tiger. I have my students present individually, but it can easily be adapted for group work if you don't have time for individual presentations.
