Students can summarize their school memories with an original poem using this foolproof graphic organizer for a non-rhyming poem that’s sure to please. I have used it for many, many years, and it’s always a big hit.

★ There is one template for the rough draft and one for the final copy. One rough draft template has been adapted for use to create an end of year poem. The other rough draft template can be used to write a poem about anything. (That template has one extra line. I have included a final copy for that generic template as well.) I have included version with skip count baselines and plain lines.

Title/First Line: The first line is also the title and is a word or phrase about school: My School Year, Smith School, A Year of School, School Memories, School Days, First Grade, Kindergarten, My Second Grade Year, etc.

The second line consists of 2 adjectives, describing words, that describe school: friendly, busy, exciting, challenging, enjoyable, amazing, welcoming, active, creative, wonderful, etc.

The third line consists of 3 –ing words or phrases that tell things the student did in school: reading, writing, learning, thinking, solving problems, creating, playing, making friends, counting, adding, subtracting, etc.

The fourth line is a complete sentence about school: School is the best place to be! I enjoy coming to school! I will miss school this summer! I can’t wait for second grade! My teacher taught me so much! I will never forget first grade! I have learned many new things! Etc.

The last line is a feeling word or phrase or a sound word or phrase, or some kind of clincher: Great memories! Cool place to be! Hooray! Summer’s coming! Best year ever! Amazing!

The poem can be mounted at the top or bottom of a 12 x 18 piece of construction paper Then the student can create an illustration to be placed on the other half of the construction paper. You can illustrate with simple crayon, watercolors, colored chalk on construction paper, a crayon resist and more.

I have also used this template for students’ favorite sports, favorite places, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc. The poems are always quite impressive. I’ve used them for displays, and people always loved reading the poems.
