Students assess the successes and shortcomings of the later stages of Reconstruction in the 1870s. This works well with my previous lesson comparing Presidential and Congressional Reconstruction. After analyzing documents with chronological events of Reconstruction in the 1870s, students complete a closing activity that asks them to form their own interpretation of Reconstruction after reading a brief overview of the historiography of Reconstruction, including the Dunning School and changes in historical views of the period.
