Use this pre-assessment/anticipation guide on energy in living systems prior to beginning to plan your ecology unit or lessons on the cycling of matter and transfer of energy in ecosystems, in order to uncover the misconceptions your students may have.
At the end of the unit, use the provided student reflection handout to give students a chance to revisit their thinking, and write about how their understanding has changed.
• A simple quick ready-to-print pre-assessment/anticipation guide for students to complete.
• A teacher key with an explanation of the misconception(s) related to each question on the pre-assessment.
• A student reflection handout to be used at the end of the unit on which students are asked to compare their understanding at the beginning and end of the unit, and to write about how their thinking has changed.
The questions were based on research done by the American Association For the Advancement of Science on student misconceptions in science, and on my own three decades of experience teaching science.
This product is also part of a money-saving bundle of similar anticipation guides found here: Uncovering Student Misconceptions in Science BUNDLE
