PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This activity is an inquiry-based activity. Students will explore the idea of food webs before actually learning about them.

Each group of students will get a set of Pond Organisms cards. They will go through cards and sort them based similarities. Encourage them to look what the organisms “take in” and “put out”. After they have sorted the cards and studied the organisms, they will create a food web. To create the food web the students will need to place the phytoplankton card on the table in front of them. They will start with phytoplankton and then find all of the things that eat phytoplankton (trout, dragonfly, and mayfly) and place them above the phytoplankton. Then they will continue doing this until they have used all the cards.

Once they have created their food webs, they will read the descriptions of producer, consumer, and decomposer and classify each organism based on those classifications.
