In sports, when you try to hit or kick a ball as hard as you can, what you're attempting to do, in scientific terms, is work on the ball. You are trying to transfer as much kinetic energy from your body into the ball. Sports balls are hugely varied from perfectly smooth, dimpled, and squishy.
