Concept Taught: Law of Conservation of Energy and transformation of energy
Purpose: The Law of Conservation of Energy tells us that energy cannot be created or destroyed only transformed. This activity is designed to help student develop a deeper understanding of how energy is transformed from one form to another. Students must analyze various examples of energy transfer and then determine the original form of energy and what form that energy is being transformed into. This activity can be used as a card sort manipulative or played as a card game activity. The instructions for how to use the cards to play a game are outlined below. It is important to note that the picture cards can sometimes have several correct matches if justified correctly. For example, the “lightning strike” picture could be justified as electrical to thermal because of the heat it produces or as electrical to sound because of the thunder noise that is made when the strike occurs. Another correct match would be electrical to radiant because of the light produced. Before beginning either activity (sort or card game), students should understand that cards can be justified/argued as more than one type of transformation.
