All the application problems from the Engage NY First Grade math curriculum in a Math Journal format. These math journals come in 2 different versions so that you can easily differentiate for your students.
The first version includes the application problem exactly as it is worded in the Engage NY curriculum. It also includes additional scaffolds such as model templates (number bonds, place value charts, tape diagrams, etc...), blank number sentences and writing lines. This version is perfect for those students who need a little more structure. The pre-drawn number sentence templates and writing lines also help students work a little more quickly, which is important in this fast-paced curriculum.
The second version has just the question and prompts to Read, Draw and Write. This version is great for students who have a repertoire of drawing and writing strategies under their belt and can choose which one works best for them. I often let students choose which format works best, boosting engagement and ownership of learning.
All the journals include 3 pages of Success Criteria with picture support and examples for the Read, Draw, Write problem solving protocol, plus a page at the end for student reflection.
Please note: Some of the lessons in the curriculum do not have an Application Problem. For this reason, you will see gaps in the lesson numbers. It is not an error.
