Words are our friends! Involve and engage your students in learning new vocabulary with this enhancement of the 7-step vocabulary method. Repeat these steps enthusiastically every day, in any subject, and believe me, I know from experience, your students will become word lovers and will enjoy tuning in to new words. There are 3 pages: 1) How to involve students in the 7 steps, 2) Teaching tips and rationale,

3) Words strips for the word wall. Teaching 3-5 word at a time should not take more than 15 minutes.

Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.
Acquire and use accurately a range of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level; demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when encountering an unknown term important to comprehension or expression.
Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases by using context clues, analyzing meaningful word parts, and consulting general and specialized reference materials, as appropriate.
Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.
Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal precise actions, emotions, or states of being (e.g., quizzed, whined, stammered) and that are basic to a particular topic (e.g., wildlife, conservation, and endangered when discussing animal preservation).
