Wondering how to enhance your classroom's reading culture without adding an extra grading burden? Students need opportunities to talk about what they are reading with others, to make reading lists, and to reflect on what they have read. This Spotabook, which is a play off of Spotify, reading activity and bulletin board set is meant to engage students in meaningful pop culture activities that serve all of these purposes.

Reading Activity Resource Contents

  • 3 versions: Google Drive link for editable student activity pages, an editable PPT so you can alter the directions, and a secure PDF with examples and notes for use
  • My Playlist activities, which students can use to
    • create book reading lists much like Spotify music playlists
    • reflect on and analyze the book they are currently reading or just finished
    • list song titles that would be appropriate for a book's playlist

  • Writing Reflection exercises, which are brief and require students to write a few sentences, using textual evidence, to defend their interpretations
  • A text message activity, which students can use to reveal different avenues of thought about their text, focusing on characters, author intent, language, and theme, for example
  • A booksnap or playlist cell phone graphic organizer so students can draw or digitally create visual reflections about their books
  • Student direction pages for each activity
  • Examples of most of the activities
  • A basic rubric, should you choose to grade them as part of a reading notebook or separately, although I don't think these activities necessarily need to be graded. Instead, I would recommend using them as talking points for discussions and conferences with students.
  • Pieces for a display or a bulletin board if you would like students to cut out their phones and put them on a wall, door, or board to add to throughout the year. Two title options are included.

This reading activity is intended to be light-hearted but also fun and engaging. In order for it to successfully add to your classroom's reading culture, make time to talk about students' thinking about their books as they complete the activities. For instance, have them bring the books to small group discussions, to conferences with you, and include them in book talks.

NOTE: This reading bulletin board kit is part of a larger bookish culture reading bulletin board bundle!
