Non-Fiction and research projects that engage students. This zip file is a bundle of five of my high interest lessons--three of them are for non-fiction and two are short research projects. All are included in other bundles, so please check descriptions below!
Every year I teach a non-academic twelfth grade class. The curriculum is, unfortunately, just a watered down version of the college prep course, and not much appeals to my clientele. So, I have created several lessons designed to engage these kids. The lessons are ones I use with all of my classes (even IB), but they are especially useful for capturing the attention of those whose attention is often hard to get!
The first two lessons are from my Real Life Research Projects Bundle
, which include short research projects on "Cellpones in Class" and "The Obesity Epidemic".
The three non-fiction lessons are from my Non-Fiction Lessons for Real Life Bundle
. The first lesson looks at the importance of failure, and the other two deal with our obsession with social media.
Included in each package are step-by-step instructions, student handouts, links to articles/research and slide shows to guide your discussion. I have used each lesson with a wide variety of ability levels and they are successful across the board. You may, however, need to provide some groups with more help reading the articles if their reading level is very low.
