Engineering Design: Playground Swing (Aligns with NGSS 3-5-ETS1-1, 2, & 3)
This NGSS aligned STEM project engages your students with a hands-on experience in designing and building a playground swing. While doing this project, they will learn and understand the engineering design process.
This lesson addresses NGSS Performance Expectation NGSS 3-5-ETS1-1, 2, &3: Define a simple design problem, generate and compare multiple solutions, and plan and carry out fair tests.
The lesson draws students in with a PowerPoint that challenges them to think like an engineer and asks them what they would do to address the problems shown in the presentation.
The students will then see a second PowerPoint presentation which sets out the challenge and the constraints that they must deal with in developing and building their own design.
Suggested internet links are provided for research purposes.
Students will need to address limited availability of materials and in the end, the swings must undergo tests to determine if they would be safe to use and will perform the way a swing should perform.
Student forms for designing and testing are included.
This lesson also incorporates the National Research Council’s 3D learning process.
