This activity is great for the beginning of the year for any science class and at any level. It’s the first activity I do before I start doing labs because it really emphasizes teamwork and what it takes to be a productive, responsible, cooperative, hard working and patient group member for labs and activities.
The only materials you need are 1 cup, 1 piece of tape (I give them 6 inches of masking) and 1 piece of paper. Before I give them the materials I have them write down the 5 most important parts of teamwork and we then discuss that.
They then discuss as a team how they will build their tower and draw a model/prototype. Once they have all of this done I then allow them to gather their materials and begin to build.
As groups finish I come by with a meter stick and yell out the measurements to the class. As they hear the measurements of the different groups it motivates them to rebuild and redesign (an important part of engineering).
