This unit challenges students to analyze The Declaration, Bill of Rights, On Civil Disobedience, Self-Reliance, Slave Songs, and The Gettysburg Address. It focuses on the following three thematic questions: (1) What ideals created and defined American Identity during its first 87 years of existence; (2) In what ways did the country succeed in achieving its ideas, and in what was did it fail to achieve them? (3) How were American ideals fought for, and what is the right way to fight for what you believe in?
