This product includes two setting assignments. The first assignment, a setting description of the handout, Call it Courage by Armstrong Sperry, is intended as practice for the Hatchet setting description assignment. You may decide to use both or just one in your classroom, depending on your preference.
In general terms, setting refers to the time and place of a story. To render these assignments more challenging, I have added weather, mood, and environment as perceived by the five senses. However, I have only included what the main character sees, hears, and touches (not what he smells and tastes) to simplify the environment section.
This product includes a list of the elements of setting, pre-writing sheets, pre-writing environment charts, assignment sheets, and final environment charts for both novels. Answer keys are provided for all the above sheets as well as an evaluation rubric.
