During the first week I give out this handout that explains "READING FOR SUCCESS" - our whole school participates in this to promote literacy - students read anything of their choice for the first 10 minutes of every class.
This is what I give out to let students know that they can read ANYTHING (except for text messages hahah)
It's a perfect way to start the class. It gives me time to take attendance, touch base quietly with students, hand out stuff, collect stuff ETC.
Basically ten minutes to breathe...and a lot of students comment at the end of the year that this made them fall in love with reading.
They see it as "free time" to escape into a story.
This goes along with it, if you'd like a list of suggestions for them
