Included in this resource are six research topics for students that are directly or indirectly connected to the development of the English language, beginning in England and spreading across the globe. The resource begins with a student survey, the questions are designed to test student knowledge of the English language before they begin reading and completing the tasks. They would be perfect for group work, or for class discussion.
The six topics are:
1. What are Indo-European Languages?
2. The Beginnings of English
3. Middle English
4. Early Modern English
5. Late Modern English
6. English Today and in the Future
Each topic includes a short informational passage and a related research topic with a lined area for answers/paragraph writing. I have also included the six topics and research questions in a continuous format if you prefer to have the students answer questions on paper or in their own notebooks. The six are arranged so they may be cut up and laminated as cards (you may not require the students to complete all the topics) and could be used in a center or as group work. The questions in this resource would also work well as a jigsaw activity.
I have also provided a list of websites for the six topics, although there is no reason other sites could be included. It is my hope that the websites included will continue to be available online for the forseeable future, but if you happen to find one that has done a disappearing act, please let me know! The list of websites included are only suggestions but I believe they contain most of the information that students would need. As a teacher you can also supply paper copies of online information for the students.
I also have a resource suitable for students in grades 5-7 in a different format:
