This past summer my AP Language students had to read one of the following books: "Made in America" by Bill Bryson, "The Great Typo Hunt" by Jeff Deck and Benjamin Herson, "Bryson's Dictionary of Troublesome Words" by Bill Bryson (I won't use this one again--it wasn't a narrative style like I thought it would be), "The Mother Tongue" by Bill Bryson, "Between You & Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen" by Mary Norris, and Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss. This is the test for "Made in America: An Informal History of the English Language in the United States." They took the 50-question test and had 40 minutes for the test and then 15 minutes to use their book to check answers. An answer key is included. This does not have to be limited to AP Language. NOTE: My students highly recommended this book for AP U.S. History or other American history classes.
