Students need a lot of practice with academic listening. What does it look like to be an “academic listener?” How do we foster this in our students? This is not a skill that is deliberately developed in the mainstream classroom, but certainly a skill that all students could benefit from. While our EL students’ linguistic profile is certainly an asset it makes some of the academic rigor of the classroom challenging. With this checklist you will be able to engage in conversation with your students around what it means to be an “academic listener” and equip them with the necessary skills to be successful in the mainstream classroom.
