This writing experience requires students to write and reflect about how they feel in EL class. When was a time that EL class made them feel proud of their language or culture? Do they feel confident, encouraged, safe, and part of a community in EL class? Are they working on comprehension, vocabulary, reading, academic listening or writing? These are all questions that are considered in this writing experience. It is amazing to hear how students react to this assignment. Your impact as a teacher, mentor, or tutor is truly incredible!
With the linguistic support through the word bank and the sentence starters, less proficient writers will be able to produce a few sentences with some detail. The sentence starters provides an excellent framework for students who struggle with writing. You may need to pre teach the vocabulary and require use of the sentence starters for those less proficient students. The rubric on the second page allows you and the students to reflect on the quality of their sentences/paragraph and the details expressed in their writing.
