This is a really basic character map that I give out for "The Merchant of Venice" - at the beginning of the unit.
I create a huge character wall that looks just like this, and we write up words/descriptions together as we read - and they update this sheet.
I find, given that this play has 3 main subplots (4 total - we eventually add in "The Ring Plot" after), it's easiest to divide it this way.
It helps them.
On their sheets, I also encourage them to draw hearts between characters who are in love, and connecting arrows to describe relationships (friends, etc.)
Also - I always make sure to put Shylock and Jessica on a different coloured piece of paper....you can get them to highlight them on this sheet...it sends a powerful message.
