This is a generic worksheet that will work with any major text you're studying.
It covers THEME.
Many students misunderstand theme - they think it's just a "big idea" or a genre (love and friendship, for example)....this really gets them to look at themes as LESSONS - morals that you learn from the story.
It's a chart with 5 empty boxes that you can fill out for the text you're studying
(mercy VS revenge, love and friendship, prejudice etc.).
Then they are asked to fill out:
-connections to the characters/plot in the text
-what is the author trying to teach/tell you about this big idea?
-make a connection (text to self/text to text/text to world)
NOTE - at the bottom of the handout, it asks them to fill out a box on the most important lesson they learned from the text, and how they can apply it to their real life.
This really re-enforces the idea that themes are LESSONS.
(this part of the handout can easily be turned into a great writing response for evaluation!)
