Since I've seen the success my students have had speaking Spanish using these game cards- I decided to translate them to English so that my co-teacher in our Dual Language can use them. These cards are great for English language learners as well because they are able to use the language in a fun and engaging way. The idea came from watching my students (English speakers) playing the game "headbandz" in Spanish. I also played similar games with my ELL students before my time as a Spanish teacher.

I use these cards in many ways but the two ways that I use them the most are:

1. What am I game- A student picks a card and puts in on the headband (created out of sentence strips and a paper clip) and asks a partner/small group (depending on their level) different questions. Am I a person/place/thing/etc? And his/her partner answers with a yes or no in a complete sentence until the card is guessed.

2. What are you game- A student picks a card and holds it so that his/her partner/small group can't see it. The other student(s) asks the questions. Are you a person/place/thing/etc and the student holding the card answers with a yes or no in a complete sentence until the card is guessed.

The great thing about these cards is that you can pick and choose what vocabulary your students work on and guide them to practice their Spanish in a fun and engaging way. My students absolutely love this game and constantly ask me to play it with them when we have an extra 5 minutes during the day. It also helps them with their questioning skills by forcing them to come up with "good" questions that will give them better clues such as instead of asking "are you a dog?" they can come up with questions that can narrow the answer down such as "are you a mammal?" etc.
