Herman Mehville characterizes Billy Budd as an innocent, pure young man, likening him to Adam in the Garden of Eden. A sailor on a ship, Billy earns the esteem of everyone and particularly Captain Veer. When the mean spirited, Klaggard goads Billy into an altercation leading to Billy striking him dead, Captain Veer must enforce maritime law. It stipulates Billy must be hanged.
Should Captain Veer arrange for the sentencing and subsequent hanging of Billy Budd? Video available. See SamuelGomberg@aol.com for details.
