This DBQ activity asks students to examine primary source documents of different perspectives on Catherine the Great’s rule, form a human barometer to answer the focus question, listen to their peers' take on the issue and adjust their position accordingly, then write a historically defensible thesis statement answering the focus question.
Activity is easy-to-use and is great practice for students to methodically identify relevant evidence, sourcing information, point of view, and significance of historical documents. Lesson coincides well with Advanced Placement European History, but can be utilized in World History too! Can be extended into a DBQ essay.
