- 0. DAILY PLANS:
I have added my day to day plans which covers 3 weeks of teaching. There is more than 3 weeks in the bundle so feel free to make adjustments.
- 1. CHAPTER PREVIEW:
I do these with every chapter to allow the students to at least see what we are going to be studying before the unit begins. I have included 2 different versions of the Chapter Preview sheet. The chapter preview sheets take about 20 minutes to do in class.
- 2. ENLIGHTENMENT PRESENTATION-
My introduction PPT will be in Keynote and PPT format, so that you may adjust anything that you like. I have my students take Cornell notes during the presentation which is more of a slideshow/discussion. It is 28 slides long and takes 2 days to complete. I really feel this is the best way to look at the Enlightenment thinkers in chronological order focusing on the key contribution of each thinker. The PPT goes over the following Enlightenment thinkers: Niccolo Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Baron de Montesquieu, Denis Diderot, Voltaire, Mary Wollstonecraft, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Simon Bolivar.
- 3. ENLIGHTENMENT DIAGRAM:
This is a basic introduction diagram to the Enlightenment. It will take a look at a few of the key players and essential questions of the Enlightenment. (10 MINUTES AT MOST)
- 4. ENLIGHTENMENT MUSIC-
This is a fantastic lesson that focuses on the music/art of the Enlightenment. I have included the sheet that I have students fill in while I go over this as well. There are 10 slides with this KEYNOTE although I did not include the videos or the music as I ran out of space but I did include links below for the videos I used. Youtube has tons of music and resources, but I purchased the music CD's at the dollar store. (takes about a day to teach and is really fun for the students)
Gregorian Chant from slideshow:
Renaissance Dance from slideshow:
I also have a Napoleon Dynamite clip in here as well.
NAPOLEON DYNAMITE CLIP
On the last slide of this presentation I show the famous evolution of dance video from YouTube.com.
The link will be below.

- 5. ENLIGHTENMENT SOCIAL CONTRACT ASSIGNMENT-
This is a fun lesson where the students get to create their own rules to help create a bill of rights or social contract to show the importance of trying to work out a set of rules that everyone agrees on. This lesson takes approximately one class and is assuming that the teaching portion of this has already been done.
To start with I have students go through this on their own creating 3-5 additional laws for our classroom. Following that I have the students get in groups of 3 and try to decide the things that they should add to the list but they must be in agreeance. I also allow them to remove one thing from the list that I give them. From there we share out loud and try to create a class bill of rights or social contract that we can all agree on. Each group must share out loud in front of the class their new rules and the ones they want to get rid of. I will have one student create a master list on the screen while the students are sharing from their list. Students may ask questions and even offer up suggestions after the sharing has been done. The suggestion will only be taken or written down if the members in the group agree. We will then vote as a class for which ones will stay or go once we have our list. This will be done with a simple raise of the hands while the students heads are down on their desks. Each student will get 2 votes for the rules they think are most important and the ones with the most votes get to stay on the list.
- 6. ENLIGHTENMENT FAIR PROJECT-
We have done this project as individual teachers and as a World History department. Each group of 3-4 students picks one of the philosophers and does full research on their Enlightenment thinker. It works best before the Enlightenment fair to have the students present their findings. I give EC if the students dress up and really get into their thinker. I also give the students 2 days in class to work on this project and really make sure they are either doing research or working on their presentation board. I have included the rubric as well as the project sheet.
- 7. ENLIGHTENMENT SHORT MOVIE-
This is 7 minutes long but does a good job of summarizing the Enlightenment. Feel free to use it in the PPT or just show it separately.

- 8. ENLIGHTENMENT VOCAB-
I do not have the key but will put this up once I get back to school in the fall. I am including it as a bonus as it goes over 9 words that I think are important to the Enlightenment. The best way to do this is have the students say the word with you and write down the definition which is to be said in class out loud by the teacher.
- 9. CRASH COURSE VIDEO GUIDE-
This is a stand a lone episode focusing more on the American Revolution than anything else.

- 10. TCI READING:
I am not going to include this but will be recommending this for the reading section on the Enlightenment. It is absolutely fantastic, I cannot include it in this but you may be able to google it or if you have TCI stuff at your school go and find it. If you email me I can send a link to TCI as I do not want to get copyright issues for selling anything that is not mine.
- 11. ENLIGHTENMENT THINKER CHART-
This chart can be given as a stand alone for the students to use their books or can be gone over with the teacher. I do not have the key for it with me as I will have to upload it later as it is at my school computer. It is a great resource for the majority of the thinkers from the Enlightenment.
- 12. ENLIGHTENMENT NEWSLETTER PROJECT-
This is a short project for the individuals or groups of 2 to do. It can be done on a computer or on a blank sheet of paper.
This project is simple and probably could use some expansion but the idea is sound. Would love to hear any feedback or other ideas to make this project even better.
- 13. ENLIGHTENMENT TEST/QUIZZES-
This is my test and review sheet.
- 14. ENLIGHTENMENT CLOSE READING ASSIGNMENT-
I am including the PPT/Keynote with this as I think it makes it really clear for the students doing the work. The close reading freebee below goes really well with this assignment.

- 15. MANKIND THE STORY OF ALL OF US-
Here is what is included:
- A question sheet in WORD format that will keep the students following along.
- Answers to the question sheet
- A set of notes that can be referenced for a discussion following the video.
-BONUS: History Channel Mankind Story of US Guide
This 9th episode is good for either junior high or high school as it deals with PIONEERS, North America, Siberia, James Cook, Australia, and Benjamin Franklin. I think this episode would work well with either Jr. High or High school.
Mankind embarks on a new age of exploration and tames the wilderness. In North America, Siberia and Australia ancient traditions are swept away in the name of commerce and science. Within a hundred years, the irrational fear that produced a witch trial in Salem gives way to a very rational cry for freedom. American revolutionaries confront a mighty empire. The battle for the modern world begins.

- 16. HEROS OF THE ENLIGHTENMENT:
This is a great 2 day video that really digs into some of the big themes and people of the Enlightenment. I show it every year and the kids like it as well.

This guide is a great way to teach a PPT/ Keynote. It allows the students to dig into the PPT/ Keynote and discuss with a group and meet with the teacher.
- 20. FAMOUS FIGURE EVALUATION -
Having students evaluate these famous figures is a great way to have students dig deeper into these famous figures. It includes 6 page bios, a lesson plan, PPT, and a quote analysis sheet for each of them. (Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau, Montesquieu, Jefferson, and Smith.)
