Bright Bulbs! Word Work - Enrichment Activity for Primary Grades
If you are in need of an enrichment activity that focuses on word relationships, this may be your answer.
This resource includes 2 versions of the same activity.
Both versions give you 72 light bulbs containing 3 words each. The students must read the 3 words and think of one word that can be placed either in front of or after all three words to make a new word or a common phrase. Example: If the 3 words on the bulb are PLAY, PAL, and PIG, then an acceptable answer would be PEN. The words or phrases that would be formed are PLAYPEN, PEN PAL, PIGPEN.
When using the first version, the students will write the word that they have added to each of the three words, and then write the new words or phrases on the sheet. Each sheet contains six bulbs.
The second version includes 72 light bulbs (same words as the first version) on task cards. After printing, laminating (optional), and cutting the cards, the teacher will place the selected cards in various areas of the classroom. The students will move around the classroom, find a solution to the card, and record their answers on the recording sheet included in this resource.
Answer Keys are included. (Note: These are suggested answers. There are other possible solutions to some of the cards.)
I mainly use this activity with my higher reading group, but sometimes I use the document camera to work on a few cards with my whole group. The kids always have fun as we figure the cards out together.
This activity may also be used as time fillers, exit slips, literacy centers, small group work, morning work, and much more!
