The relationship between number sense, mental math strategies, and rounding numbers is so closely linked that I have developed a packet in order make certain that rounding to the nearest ten becomes automatic for my students. I have found that the skill level of my second graders is varied in the area of rounding, so the packet contains introductory and review lessons, as well as some that are very challenging and link rounding to other key skills. I have included seven lesson ideas, including 2 poems, lessons that give kids a chance to "move and prove" their answers, and two games. The first game, Tens Tag, is based on the same format as "I Have, Who Has..." and includes easy clues as well as really challenging ones. The second game, "StraTENgy", involves playing four tic-tac-toe boards at once. The students spin for numbers, may use addition or subtraction to get the number that will round to a ten they require to fill a sequence, and then the players place butterflies over the flowers on the tic-tac-toe board to complete a sequence of three tens. Detailed directions are included in the packet. I hope that this brings fun and a deeper understanding of rounding to your kids. I hope that you enjoy using these ideas in your classroom, and I hope that you click to "follow me" as I plan for my next packet based on Mental Math strategies!
