This document contains notes, videos,webquest, an article, a Ted Talk video with questions, a virtual lab, and an essay for biotechnology. Notes cover the main concepts of biotechnology (DNA databases, cloning, regulation of antibiotics, GMO's, gene therapy, embryonic stem cell research, and genetic screening) and an organizer for students to use to write down their notes during lecture and notes during videos. The webquest leads students through four different websites with guiding questions ending in an essay and the answer key. The Ted talk is about the idea of redesigning humans with questions that go in order. The article is about the benefits and risks of biotechnology that has students write a 2 paragraph essay asking the students to explain the concept to someone who has never heard of it before. In the virtual lab students work through a gel electrophoresis where they learn the different tools used in a lab, run a gel and compare DNA base pairs to solve for the criminal. At the end of this unit students write an essay where they have to take a stance on GMO and have to defend their opinion, a rubric is provided.
