The beauty of a thematic unit; the teacher designs the course around a topic and then selects grammar and syntax that is sequential and developmentally appropriate for the curriculum. "Scaffolding" is the current terminology, however I like to refer to this educational strategy as "spiraling". If you are using a proficiency model rubric, your vocabulary is your core and you select the grammar and discussion focus for the novice, intermediate or advanced level speaker of Spanish. Provide the framework and examples and students using their prior knowledge and skills, reuse and recycle while continually expanding with more complex structures and newer vocabulary. The vocabulary in this product are for advanced Spanish language studies and will provide your students with an opportunity to self-pace. Each student can be successful regardless of their skill level as they take a more active role in their own learning.
Since the 80's a reoccurring theme in world issues and subsequently children and young adult literature is that of the global environment; the care of the planet, the conservation of wildlife and the habitat and conservation of our natural resources. Young people today have a lot to say about their world but do not always have a format with which to express themselves. When given the opportunity to discuss the issue of the environment, it is easy to see that students do possess a profound, social conscience and can make powerful statements in Spanish.
Maestra Mapache has first created these activities and used in her own classroom. Secondly these activities are designed to be adaptable to any of your lesson units and the vocabulary has been prepared with terminology to allow the teacher flexibility in lesson preparation. Every effort has been made to ensure that all vocabulary is common usage however since language evolves rapidly, please share your feedback and suggestions for newer expressions.
