Product Description

In this bundle, you get the 7 graph prompts I used with my Environmental Science students this year (however, they'd work great for any class in which you want to practice graphing- the topics are just enviro-related). The graphs are line graphs, bar graphs, and/or scatter plots. The students always have to write a CER about the graph they make; sometimes I give them some support, sometimes I leave it open. Each CER is different.

Also, since I work on graphing and CERs with my Bio students too (and Bio is a pre-requisite to Enviro), I noticed that some students needed more of a challenge. For some of the later graph prompts, you will see a non-challenge version, and a challenge version, of the same data set. I bribed my students with a bonus two points if they took the challenge version; to my surprise, MANY opted to go this route every time! With two versions of the graphs you can offer a challenge like I did, or just hand it out to students who need to be pushed—yay, differentiation! The graphs are as follows:

  • Soil: bar graph
  • Air pollution: Double line graph
  • Energy consumption: scatter plot with best fit line (the statistic r^2 is discussed in the prompt)
  • Population dynamics, non-challenge: scatter plot with BFL  (the statistic r^2 is discussed in the prompt)
  • Population dynamics, challenge: scatter plot with BFL; has challenging axis that includes negative and positive numbers, AND small decimals  (the statistic r^2 is discussed in the prompt)
  • Energy, non-challenge: double bar graph
  • Energy, challenge: graph utilizing two different y-axes
  • GHGs and Atmosphere, non-challenge: double line graph
  • GHGs and Atmosphere, challenge: line graph with four lines (lots of data to graph)
  • Trash, non-challenge: bar graph
  • Trash, challenge: bar graph with a challenging scale, as most numbers are in the thousands and one is in the hundred thousands

The 10-point rubric I use is included; feel free to create your own if mine does not suit your needs. All graph prompts are in Word, so you can change/add questions as wanted/needed!

*You will get a zipped (compressed) folder with the prompts in a Word doc (so you can easily edit them), and the answer keys as a PDF file. You will have to extract the files in order to access and use them.

NOTE: This bundle DOES come with answer keys! I do sell a version without the keys for a slightly lower price.
