In order to determine the amount of pollution generated by YOUR SCHOOL Staff and Students, students will conduct an inventory of the parking lot and streets near the school. Students will work in groups to record the make, model, year, and type of vehicle on the parking lot/street around school. When that is complete, students will return inside to conduct internet research to learn about the environmental impact of each vehicle.
This lesson is interesting to students because they can get out of the classroom and do specific research on the types of vehicles they see every day. This data is then analyzed to determine the environmental impact of the staff and student vehicles. Students can also evaluate their "dream cars" for fuel economy and environmental concerns.
This lesson would be good for cross-curricular projects as well!
