The purpose of this activity is to explore Maryland stream quality by studying its biological & chemical properties. (This activity is obviously very "Maryland-centric" but could be modified to adjust to your state's DNR or Department of Natural Resources).
This interactive investigation brings to light the problems of stream pollution and its effects. Various websites utilizes google earth to study streams in student neighborhoods as well as other Internet resources. The activity ends with a "SOS" or "Save Our Streams" PowerPoint that shows how students can get involved to help.
Some terms/concepts covered in this activity include:
biological stream survey
1st order stream
4th order stream
chemical stream survey
SOS "Save Our Streams" program
