This is a bundle of 6 environmental and earth science lessons on minerals, rocks, soil, fossil fuels, and renewable energy. It is designed to facilitate independent learning and is ideal for sub plans or simply to encourage self-instruction of basic concepts.
Each lesson includes:
1. Lesson- Content & vocabulary gained through internet links, videos, and/or PowerPoint presentations.
2. Activity- Lab, game, or class activity designed to apply the concepts learned in the lesson.
3: Assessment- Quiz, assignment, exit ticket, or project as a culmination and review of lesson
This curriculum is ideally geared towards high school students, but is appropriate for any student looking for an independent, student-centered approach to learning.
Lesson Plan topics include:
1. Minerals- Composition & Properties
characteristics, special properties and examples of minerals including color, luster, crystal formation, density, hardness, streak, and cleavage or fracture
2. Rocks & The Rock Cycle
general characteristics of rocks, rock cycle, uniformitarianism, plutonic and volcanic rocks, composition & texture of igneous rocks, sediments, clastic sedimentary rocks, chemical sedimentary rocks, and organic sedimentary rocks, weathering/erosion, types of metamorphism, foliated and non-foliated metamorphic rocks, felsic, mafic, ultramafic, and intermediate compositions, as well as common examples of each rock type
3. Soil Composition & Horizons
soil horizons and layers, soil texture, and soil composition. Students will love testing their own soil samples to determine the amounts of sand, silt, and clay.
4. Soil Erosion & Conservation
types of water erosion, types of wind erosion, necessity and practices for soil conservation
5. Fossil Fuels & Energy
nonrenewable v. renewable, coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear power, benefits and problems with each type
6. Renewable Energy Sources
biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, wind power, benefits and problems with each type
BONUS: Extension Activity: GMOs and Agriculture
*Each of my Environmental Science Bundles include a Current Event activity for extending student thinking. This activity allows students to research both sides of the debate surrounding Genetically Modified Crops.
My Environmental Science Series includes lessons for each sphere of the earth:
1. Environmental Science: Atmosphere Bundle
2. Environmental Science: Biosphere Bundle
3. Environmental Science: Lithosphere Bundle
4. Environmental Science: Hydrosphere Bundle (coming February 2017)
These lessons are designed to be easy to use for both students and teachers. Regardless of whether you've taught Environmental Science for years or just need a few quick lessons to add to your science curriculum, this is the perfect selection.
