Students individually conduct research on an environmental threat of their choice. The lesson provides them with step by step guidelines on what to research and provides them a template for writing their paper. These activities provide students with critical skills needed for success in college. Students must conduct their research using credible sources, in particular peer reviewed journal articles. The teacher scaffolds students as needed and provides encouragement. In addition, these activities provide students with critical skills needed for success in college.They find this activity extremely challenging, but their self-efficacy improves greatly when they experience and see evidence of their learning. Often, upon completion of this assignment, students become passionate about the threat to the environment and want to pursue a career in a related field. This is an extremely active learning activity where students are self-directed and motivated to learn and perform well.
