This journal is helpful in getting your students to explain their thinking for each math lesson. I usually have my students work in journal on their own for 3 minutes after lesson. They they then have 5 minutes to discuss with partner or table group. After that I pick a few students to share their thinking/response.
The circles are a great way for students to assess their own understanding. They can color red for need help, yellow for a little confused, green for I understand, and blue for I can teach someone else.
It makes it easy to identify students for intervention grouping or pair students up for a coaching activity.
